Are offline racing games still any good?
A lot of racing games pushed everyone online, so I wondered whether the offline arcade racer was a dying breed. Turns out there are still solid ones around.
Dustline Rally was the one that reminded me why I liked the genre. The handling has real character, and the ghost-replay feature means you always have someone to race against, even in airplane mode.
The trick with offline racers is progression. The good ones let you earn upgrades purely by driving, instead of locking the fun behind a connection or a shop. That keeps the whole thing in your control.
If you want something to play on a long flight, a racer with plenty of single-player stages is hard to beat. Just download it before you leave.
